The Bluegrass doesn't do red maples and sourwood like Eastern Kentucky does. What it does is turn golden -- horse farm pastures, sycamore-lined creeks, rolling hills going amber under October light. Stone fences built two centuries ago run alongside roads that smell like woodsmoke and bourbon mash in the fall. Start in Versailles at The Amsden, one of the most-visited shops on the Kentucky Coffee Trail. Take US-68 through Keene -- horse farms on both sides, the real thing -- then work your way south through Wilmore, Lawrenceburg, and Springfield on back roads that see almost no traffic. KY-555 through Mackville is the hidden road on this route. Remember it. Finish in Bardstown with two trail shops in the Bourbon Capital of the World. The color peaks late here -- plan for the last two weeks of October for the best show.
